 History

Kilkenny is the anglicised version of the Irish Cill Chainnigh, meaning Church of Cainneach or Canice. This relates to the church and round tower, now St. Canice's Cathedral.

Most buildings are built of black limestone, thus the name the Marble City. Kilkenny is the county town of the County. It is situated on both banks of the River Nore, at the centre of County Kilkenny. The population of the town is approximately 25,000.

In hurling, by far the dominant sport in the county, Kilkenny GAA have won the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship a record thirty-six times and the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship seventy times.
